Fond memories from a former student
We just received an email from Theresa Quirk, who was delighted to find FAS on the web. Here’s her story:
A long time ago, back in 1968, my dad enrolled me in your art program. I was 12 years old. Sadly, I was unable to finish the Course due to my dad’s sudden death when I was 13. I only began to seriously paint and pursue my art career after 9/11. Now I look back and remember the big FAS books and all the lessons, and I realize those books did have a lifelong impact on me. I feel proud to mention you as part of my artistic growth.
You can see some of Theresa’s work at www.tquirk.com.

FAS student expresses appreciation
Perhaps the single most valuable aspect of the art instruction provided by a Famous Artists Course is this: the individual and personal relationship that develops between the student and his/her instructor.
One student recently wrote to instructor Hank McLaughlin as follows:
As I send in Lesson 10 I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all of the effort and time you dedicated to helping me develop my painting skills. You are an excellent teacher with encouraging and positive criticisms that were most welcome. Your thoughtful comments, suggestions and guidance were offered in such a positive manner!

FAS student shares her knowledge
Current FAS student Ann Boulden recently wrote her instructor, Hank McLaughlin, as follows:
Dear Hank, Because of my lessons and your wonderful critiques, our co-op gallery is starting a critique session prior to our monthly business meetings. They have asked me to bring some of my lessons with your critiques, so we may all know how to critique each other’s work. Thank you!
Thanks, Ann, for letting us know about your co-op gallery. We’d like to hear more about it, as it sounds like a wonderful forum for artists to work together and exchange ideas.

FAS Alumna Pam Rice goes from strength to strength

Pam Rice has a full and varied career in the world of art. In addition to her “day job” as Vice President of Design Services at an advertising agency in Chicago, where she oversees the firm’s creative operations and manages their programs in design education and training, she is enjoying increasing success as a fine art painter. In June, she will have an exhibit of her work in Chicago, showing her new work—including the paintings reproduced here.
In whatever spare time she happens to have, Pam gives back to her community. Recently, she was honored because of her annual donation of time, talent, creativity and devotion by designing the Annual Report for Family Service of South Lake County. Each year, Pam spends approximately 80 hours to complete each report. In five years, that adds up to over 400 hours of donated time. “Her dedication gives Family Service a clean, professional look in everything we do.”
We’re proud of you, Pam!

A graduate reflects on his art studies with FAS
Larry Gibbs, one of our graduates, recently sent us these comments about his experience as a student of Famous Artists School:
The vast amount of information on each area of art and commercial art has always been my main impression of the FAS texts. I would say that there is a thoroughness and a determination by each artist depicted in the texts and the “narrator” instructor if you please, to teach the student the lesson at hand. These observed qualities always took me to the limit of my abilities to do each lesson well. There was one more observation over the length of the Course: invariably I would make a key mistake which would be pointed out by the lesson critique, and in the next lesson there would be an “enlightenment” on how to avoid these key mistakes—which I thought was a good way to teach.
We’re always glad to hear from our alums!

Former FAS Student Checks In
FAS was founded in 1947, and so our community of graduates and former students is extensive. Frequently, we receive letters and calls from members of that community, bringing us up to date on their current activities and reflecting on the influence of Famous Artists School on their lives.
Just yesterday, we had an e-mail from a former student, Dann Jones. He wrote:
Just a note to say hello and to tell you that many years ago when I was in high school I took the FAS course. I still have and use the instruction books that came with it, and I still learn from it every time I open it up. Although I’m interested in all phases of art, my main thing is in drawing cartoon caricatures at art fairs and festivals. I’m now 61 and just recently have undergone open heart surgery. While in recovery I’m practicing my drawings. It’s great therapy and lots of fun. I will recommend FAS to anyone who is interested in the wonderful world of art.
Thanks, Dann, and good luck with your recovery!
